Volcano Climbing in Rwanda
Rwanda is not only famous for its mountain gorillas but also for its thrilling volcano climbing experiences. Nestled in Volcanoes National Park, five of the eight Virunga Volcanoes—Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Muhabura, and Gahinga—offer incredible hiking opportunities for all skill levels. These volcanoes provide stunning views, diverse wildlife, and an unforgettable adventure for nature enthusiasts.
Mount Karisimbi (4507m)
The highest of the Virunga Volcanoes and Africa’s 11th highest peak, Karisimbi is a two-day climb. Hikers enjoy views of its two craters, rare bird species, and golden monkeys.
Mount Bisoke (3711m)
A one-day trek suitable for visitors staying in Musanze or even starting from Kigali at 4:00 am. The highlight is its stunning Crater Lake (Lake Ngezi) at the summit. The trek takes about 6 hours (4 hours up, 2 hours down).
Mount Muhabura (4127m)
Located along the Rwanda-Uganda border, this volcano offers breathtaking views of five other Virunga peaks and the Twin Lakes (Ruhondo and Bulera). It’s a one-day climb, taking 5-7 hours round trip.
Mount Gahinga (3474m)
The shortest climb among Rwanda’s Virunga Volcanoes, though best hiked from Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Mount Sabyinyo (3634m)
Located at the Rwanda-Uganda-DRC border, its peak allows hikers to stand in three countries at once. Though accessible from Rwanda, it is best climbed from Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park. The Rurambo trail leads to multiple peaks, while the Sabyinyo trail takes climbers to a single peak.
Best Time for Volcano Climbing
Climbing is possible year-round, but the dry seasons (June-September & December-February) are ideal. The wet seasons (March-May & October-November) make trails muddy and slippery, increasing difficulty.
Essential Gear for Volcano Climbing
Pack lightweight safari pants, long-sleeved shirts, a rain jacket, strong hiking boots, gaiters, comfortable socks, gloves, a safari hat, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera with extra batteries, a first aid kit, a waterproof backpack, and at least two liters of drinking water.
