Karenge Bush Camp: A Secluded Paradise in Akagera National Park
Nestled in the heart of Akagera National Park’s wilderness, Karenge Bush Camp offers a serene and secluded retreat for travelers seeking a blend of privacy, comfort, and an authentic African safari experience. The name “Karenge” is derived from the local Kinyarwanda dialect, meaning “small footprint,” a perfect representation of the camp’s minimal ecological impact and commitment to sustainability.
A True Wilderness Experience
Karenge Bush Camp is one of the few eco-friendly accommodations in Rwanda, designed with sustainability in mind. From its inception, the camp has operated on a seasonal basis, leaving behind nothing but a light footprint on its natural surroundings. Remarkably, Karenge Bush Camp is open for 11 months each year, closing only in April to allow the vegetation to rejuvenate during the peak of the rainy season. When it was first established in 2016, the camp operated only from June to August. However, by 2017, it extended its availability to also include December through February, allowing more visitors to experience its untamed beauty.
Accommodation and Amenities
Karenge Bush Camp features six luxurious canvas tents, each designed for two guests, with a total capacity of 12 visitors per night. Each tent is positioned for privacy and is well-equipped with comfortable camp beds with cozy mattresses, a sitting area with traditional camp chairs, and reed mat floors for a rustic touch. Guests also enjoy outdoor bucket showers with both hot and cold water, eco-toilets, and canvas basins, all designed to be environmentally friendly. The camp is powered by solar lighting, ensuring sustainability. Built using natural and eco-friendly materials, Karenge Bush Camp can be easily disassembled at the end of each season without leaving a trace.
Breathtaking Views and Wildlife Encounters
Karenge Bush Camp offers stunning views of Lake Ihema and the sweeping savannah plains, where guests can observe Rwanda’s diverse wildlife. Common sightings include lions, elephants, buffaloes, impalas, Topis, and spotted hyenas. To enhance safety and minimize animal disturbances, each canvas tent is raised off the ground, allowing guests to enjoy an immersive bush experience while remaining secure.
A Perfect Getaway in the Wilderness
Whether you’re planning a romantic retreat, a weekend escape, or an unforgettable Rwandan safari, Karenge Bush Camp offers an unmatched wilderness experience. However, be sure to plan your visit within its operational months to fully enjoy its exclusivity and charm.
Affordable Rates & Booking Information
Karenge Bush Camp offers pocket-friendly rates for both international and resident travelers. International visitors can stay for $195 per person per night in a double or twin tent and $265 per person per night in a single tent. For children aged 6-12 years sharing on a mattress, the rate is $95 per night.
