Nyungwe Forest National Park (NFNP) is one of Africa’s richest primate destinations, home to 13 distinct primate species. Located in Rwanda’s Southern Province, it covers an area of 1,019 sq. km along the Western Great Rift Valley, stretching from Lake Albert to Lake Tanganyika. The park borders Burundi to the south, Lake Kivu to the west, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Established as a national park in 2004, Nyungwe Forest is one of Africa’s newest protected areas. It shelters diverse wildlife, including over 85 mammal species, 2,000 tree species, 1,068 plant species, and 310 bird species. The park offers breathtaking views of Lake Kivu and the Virunga region, with well-maintained hiking trails, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints.

1. Chimpanzee Tracking
Chimpanzee trekking is the park’s most popular activity, with two main trekking areas: Cyamudongo Forest and Uwinka. Nyungwe hosts about 500 chimpanzees, and treks are available in the morning and afternoon. Along the trails, visitors may also spot other primates like colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys. A chimpanzee tracking permit costs $100 per person.
2. Birdwatching
Nyungwe is a premier birding destination, offering opportunities to see Albertine Rift endemics and other forest species. Key birds include:

Nyungwe is the only park in East Africa offering a canopy walk. The walk takes place along the Igishigishigi Trail, with a suspended bridge 60 meters above the ground. This unique experience provides spectacular views of the treetops and chances to spot primates and birds.

Best Time to Visit Nyungwe
Nyungwe Forest National Park is open year-round, but the best time for primate trekking is during the dry seasons:

Wet seasons (March to May and October to November) make trekking more challenging due to muddy trails but still offer great wildlife experiences.
