Musanze Caves – A Must-Visit

Musanze Caves are a top attraction, ideal for combining with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Formed from Cenozoic volcanic rocks 65 million years ago, these caves are part of the basaltic layer from Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Bisoke.

Musanze Caves feature 31 entrances, mostly roof collapses, creating stunning light effects. The main cave has a cathedral-sized entrance and shelters large bat colonies. Spanning 2 km, the caves have walkways and stairs for easy exploration.

Cultural & Historical Significance

Musanze Caves served as shelter during wars, including the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Protected since 2010, they are only accessible via guided tours (2.5-3 hours). Visitors must be respectful.

Best Time to Visit
