Overview

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a must-visit destination for primate lovers, offering a rare chance to see mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in their natural habitat. This small yet diverse protected area is part of the Virunga Volcanoes and sits at an altitude of 2,227 to 4,127 meters above sea level.

Location & Size

Location: Southwestern Uganda, Kisoro District, Borders: Rwanda & the Democratic Republic of Congo, Size: 33.7 km² (Uganda’s smallest National Park), Established: 1991, primarily to protect mountain gorillas and their habitat and Name Origin: “Mgahinga” comes from the local dialect, meaning “small lava stones,” which are commonly found at the volcano’s base.

1. Wildlife

Home to 39 mammal species, including:

  • Primates: Mountain gorillas (main highlight), golden monkeys, olive baboons, black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, and vervet monkeys.
  • Other mammals: Elephants, forest buffaloes, serval cats, golden cats, spotted hyenas, bush babies, and side-striped jackals.

2. Birdlife

  • Over 180 bird species, including Albertine Rift endemics such as: Archer’s ground robin, Kivu ground-thrush, Shelley’s dusky crimson wing, Scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird
  • Other species: White-napped raven, yellow-throated long claws, paradise flycatchers, and regal sunbird.

Mgahinga hosts three of the eight Virunga Volcanoes:

  1. Mount Muhabura (4,127m) – “The Guide”
  2. Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m) – “Old Man’s Teeth”

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be visited all year round, but the best months are:

  • Why? Drier trails, easier trekking, and better wildlife viewing.

  • Why? Trails are muddy and slippery, but gorilla treks are shorter since food is abundant.

  • Flights: From Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Kisoro Airstrip.
  • Drive Time from Kisoro Airstrip: 45 minutes to the park.

By Road

  1. From Kampala/Entebbe (8-9 hours)
    • Route: Kampala – Masaka – Mbarara – Kisoro
    • Recommended: 4×4 vehicle due to rough roads.
  2. From Kigali, Rwanda (4-5 hours)
    • Route: Kigali – Cyanika Border – Kisoro – Mgahinga.
    • A quicker alternative for international travelers.
