Akagera National Park, Rwanda
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savanna wildlife park and home to all the Big Five game animals. Located in Eastern Rwanda, the park was established in 1934 and spans an area of 1,122 square kilometers. The park derives its name from the Kagera River, which flows along its eastern border with Tanzania and empties into Lake Ihema and other smaller lakes within and around the park.
Landscape and Ecosystem
Akagera National Park features an extensive savanna landscape with breathtaking scenery, characterized by bush and acacia vegetation. It is considered the largest wetland-protected area in East-Central Africa, with numerous swamps and lakes. The park’s diverse network of water sources and varied terrain make it one of the most scenic wildlife destinations in the region.
History
Akagera National Park was originally established as Rwanda National Park in 1934 to protect its unique vegetation and diverse wildlife. At the time of its establishment, the park covered 2,500 square kilometers, making it one of Africa’s largest wetland reserves. However, after the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, a significant portion of the park’s land was allocated to returning refugees for settlement, reducing its size by nearly half and posing conservation challenges.
